Romania: Readers' Experiences

The following reports were sent in by readers of this website, following visits to Romania. Please add to this collection, after your visit.

Paul Montgomery of Belfast writes (Sept 2005):

In July my son and I travelled to Romania and Bulgaria in our motorhome. Your articles in MMM January and March 2005 proved invaluable.

We stayed at the Dutch campsites Benelux in Blajel, De Oude Wilg at Carta (where we were of course welcomed with some cherry and blackcurrant liqueur) and Gilau (to the west of Cluj) on the way back. Also stayed at Camping Dirste outside Brasov. Visited Sibiu, Sighisoara, Brasov and Bran (Dracula's Castle) and also crossed over the Fagaras Mountains. Weather terrible - torrential thunderstorms.

Got totally lost trying to circumnavigate Bucharest. Terrible hassle crossing the border from Romania (Giurgiu) to Bulgaria (Ruse). Had to bribe one of the Romanian officials (I think it was because I didn't have a Romanian Vignette), but once in Bulgaria the road south was relatively traffic-free and the countryside was very pleasant. Stayed at the campsite beside Dryanovo Monastery where there were some other Dutch motorhomes. Both countries were fascinating (especially the Saxon towns and villages in Transylvania) and I only wish we had had more time to explore other regions. We saw very few other motorhomers - mostly Dutch at the Dutch campsites.
