Motorhome Security 1
Rod Heely Finikounda, Greece Autumn 2012
Rod's problems started when he spent a night in his Swift Sundance motorhome on a German Autobahn Service Area on his way to Greece with a friend.
There are no noticeable changes here in Greece: the campsite prices remain the same as last year and prices in general seem about the same. The weather is good at 28-30°C. This campsite had a full summer although there were not so many foreigners - mostly Greeks. There are only 5 campers here at the moment, which is not very good at all. I hope it picks up: send as many as you can, so long as you like them!
Break-in on German Motorway
About the robbery! We were parked up on motorway services on the A7, south of Ulm and about 70 km north of Kempten in Germany. At approximately 5.30am I felt a slight rocking of the motorhome. My mate was sleeping in the back, with me in the front (over the cab) and neither of us heard anything. I lifted my head and realised it wasn't my mate, so I shouted and grabbed my hammer but the man was out and away like a snake.
What can I say? Fit good security locks: I think he got in with a screwdriver, which broke the lock, but we heard nothing. All he got was my wallet from my jeans pocket but it contained a substantial amount of Euros and my driving licence. I keep everything else separate – cards, passport, etc, etc.
When I think back, it makes me wonder: what if he had been armed? It's very worrying and you would think that Germany is the last place where it would happen. Every country is the same now, I feel. Even so, I still feel safe here in Greece, though I won't leave the motorhome outside now without chaining the doors.
