The Horn as a Deterrent (Chris Strawson) |

Using the Motorhome's Horn as a Deterrent Christine Strawson April 2015 Christine writes: "Can I add one thing that, in conversation with others when the topic comes up,
we think many people have forgotten about ?
We all have a very loud, easily accessible horn on the steering wheel of our
vans. We have used ours twice and found it effective at both summoning help and
scaring off those either making a nuisance of themselves or, possibly up to no
good.
In the first instance, close to the open entrance of a campsite in Slovenia, we
were the centre of the unwelcome and rather scary attention of a drugged or
drunken Irishman who, banging loudly all over the van, threatened first to have
us deported and then kill us. I blasted out SOS ( or possibly OSO as Morse is
not my strong point) on the horn until Reception came to see what was happening
and to call the police.
In the second instance, in the middle of the night at Cite de Europe, we had a
number of stones thrown at the van and loud banging on the side. Blasting the
horn scared the young men doing it and they ran away. I like to think that, had
I continued then the shopping centre security patrol or even the border police
might have popped out to see what was going on.
Best wishes to you both and I hope you don't have to use any of the suggestions
in anger."
