49 Campsites in Bulgaria

Margaret and Barry Williamson – Updated December 2017

Here are the details of 49 campsites in Bulgaria. We can highly recommend Sakar Hills Camping (No 1), Camping Veliko Tarnovo (No 2) and we have heard good reports of Batak (No 2a) and Kamenovo (No 9).

Stop Press: in August 2010, John and Sue Hughes added Camping Madonna at Belogradchik, in the northwest of the country one hour from the Vidin-Calafat ferry. See No 48.

On this website, see Mike Lewis's List of 65 Campsites in Bulgaria.

For a list of 50 campsites, often with more detail, visit: Camping in Bulgaria.

Another useful site is http://www.camping.bg/.

Kamping Kromidovo:  This campsite is near Bulgaria's borders with Greece and Macedonia. However, you may be interested (and would be advised) to read our opinion of the site (with pictures) after we made a visit in November 2017: Kamping Kromidovo Reviewed.

• Facilities: free hot showers, shared barbecue, waste disposal for camper vans, electric hook-ups with European plugs, drinking water. Services: washing machine, free wi-fi internet.

Price: in November/December 2010, the winter rate was €10 per night for a couple with a motorhome, including electricity.

We used this campsite for long stays in 2008, 2009 and 2010 - a recommendation in itself. The only negative was the limited and unpredictable electricicty supply, cutting out at about 8 amps after an uncertain length of time. Quite frustrating at times.

• Facilities: free hot showers, camp kitchen, waste disposal for camper vans, electric hook-ups with European plugs, drinking water, free WiFi internet. Services: washing and drying machines, café-bar, visiting hairdresser. New swimming pool open in 2011. Small shops nearby.

• Details: Nick & Nicky Kinson, 70 Vasil Levski Street, Dragizhevo, Lyaskovets, Veliko Tarnovo 5145, Bulgaria. Tel +359 619 42777. Mobile +359 886 877244. http://www.campingvelikotarnovo.com. Email British owned and run.

6. Trinity Rocks Farm Accommodation Camping on a Farm

In October 2012, the owner/manager of the campsite wrote:

“My name is Cliff Surtees and Trinity Rocks is my home and my campsite: my website is called www.velikotarnovocamping.com, although I am in the process of updating it.

My email address is , my phone number is: 00359 899019488

We can cater for up to 15 motorhomes or caravans and as many tents, if not more.

We have everything for the camper: large kitchen, lounge with computer and Satellite TV. Hot showers, toilets, washing machines, fridges/freezers. Chemical toilet and waste water disposal. All this at no extra cost.

There are lots of trees and it is not at all hilly at the farm, though there is a lovely view of the hills in the distance. We are very pet-friendly and dogs are allowed to run free under supervision.

I have been camping and caravanning, so I know what makes a campsite special: cleanliness and hospitality. Every guest here is treated like family. Nothing is too much trouble for us to make your holiday as pleasant as possible during your stay with us. We do not charge for children.”

In May 2011, Motorhomer Jill Maxted wrote:

"Campervans, caravans, 20 lev (10 euros) per night including electricity and hot showers for two people. Tent + 2 people 10 lev or 5 euros. No WiFi or internet.

Peaceful, pretty setting beside a mountain stream above the Unesco World Heritage site of Rila Monastery. Bulgarian run. Fairly basic but okay. Restaurant/bar (in season.) We arrived at 9.30pm in early May to find the place locked and deserted. Obliged to sleep outside. Next day the owners appeared and we booked in for a further night. Moral = arrive early outside high season.

Ideal for a remote couple of days in the beautiful Rila mountains within walking distance of the stunningly beautiful Rila monastery. Walks in the surrounding hills."

Thank you, Jill

48. Camping Madonna

Near Belogradchik (NW of country approx. one hours drive from the Danube ferry at Vidin). The ferry is now very expensive almost as though they are cashing in on the ferry before the new bridge over the river is completed - it is still in the early stages of construction. The authorities are also charging port and town taxes on the Romanian side of the crossing. So much for free travel within the EU.

Camping Madonna is a tiny site, little more than a small car park in front of a private house. The owner can speak French. There is electricity and a shower is available. There is a grassy patch suitable for tents and huts are available for hire. Useful as a stopover as there is no choice of sites in the area that we know of. (Information supplied by John and Sue Hughes in August 2010).

We add: wonderful early fortified hill top, dating from Roman times, on a hill above the village of Belogradchik.
