Here are the details of 49 campsites in Bulgaria. We can highly recommend Sakar Hills Camping (No 1), Camping Veliko Tarnovo (No 2) and, for an eco-camping experience in the Rhodope Mountains, Camping Batak (No 2a). We've also had good reports of Kamenovo (No 9) but have no personal experience of the rest.
Note: We have not added Kamping Kromidovo to the list. This eco-campsite is near Bulgaria's borders with Greece and Macedonia. However, you may be interested (and would be advised) to read our opinion of the site (with pictures) after our visit in November 2017:Kamping Kromidovo Reviewed. We have everything for the camper: large kitchen, lounge with computer and Satellite TV. Hot showers, toilets, washing machines, fridges/freezers. Chemical toilet and waste water disposal. All this at no extra cost.
There are lots of trees and it is not at all hilly at the farm, though there is a lovely view of the hills in the distance. We are very pet-friendly and dogs are allowed to run free under supervision.
I have been camping and caravanning, so I know what makes a campsite special: cleanliness and hospitality. Every guest here is treated like family. Nothing is too much trouble for us to make your holiday as pleasant as possible during your stay with us. We do not charge for children.”

Peaceful, pretty setting beside a mountain stream above the Unesco World Heritage site of Rila Monastery. Bulgarian run. Fairly basic but okay. Restaurant/bar (in season.) We arrived at 9.30pm in early May to find the place locked and deserted. Obliged to sleep outside. Next day the owners appeared and we booked in for a further night. Moral = arrive early outside high season.
Ideal for a remote couple of days in the beautiful Rila mountains within walking distance of the stunningly beautiful Rila monastery. Walks in the surrounding hills."
Thank you, Jill

Near Belogradchik (NW of country approx one hour's drive from Vidin, where the ferry over the Danube to Calafat in Romania was replaced by a new toll bridge in 2013). http://www.hanmadona.com/index.php?lang=2
Camping Madonna is a site attached to an inn. The owner can speak French. There is electricity and a shower is available. There is a grassy patch suitable for tents and huts are available for hire. Useful as a stopover as there is no choice of sites in the area that we know of. (Information supplied by John and Sue Hughes in August 2010).
We add: wonderful early fortified hill top, dating from Roman times, on a hill above the village of Belogradchik.
